I’ll be honest: I love a beautiful website. Design is how your brand makes people feel, and it matters. But I’ve also seen plenty of gorgeous websites that quietly fail at the one thing they’re there to do: turn visitors into enquiries, bookings and sales.
If people are finding your website but not getting in touch, the problem is rarely how it looks. It’s usually one of these eight things.
1. It’s not clear what you do within five seconds
A poetic headline like “Where vision meets possibility” might feel on-brand, but a visitor arriving from Google needs to know immediately: what do you do, who is it for, and where are you?
The fix: keep your beautiful headline if you love it, but make sure a clear line nearby spells it out, like “Luxury lash extensions in Burleigh Heads”. Clarity and style can live together.
2. There’s no obvious next step
If visitors have to hunt for how to book, they often won’t. And if every page offers five different options, they may choose none.
The fix: decide on the one action you most want people to take, like book, call or enquire, and make it the clear, consistent button on every page. Repeat it after key sections, not just at the very top and bottom.
3. It doesn’t build enough trust
People are deciding whether to trust you with their money, their home, their business or their face. Stock photos and vague promises don’t help them decide.
The fix:
- Show real photos of you, your team, your space and your work.
- Feature genuine reviews and testimonials, with names and businesses where you can.
- Include examples, case studies or before-and-afters.
- Make your contact details, location and ABN easy to find.
4. It’s slow, especially on phones
Big animations, autoplay videos and huge images can look incredible on a fast office connection and painfully slow on a phone in a car park. Many visitors won’t wait.
The fix: compress images, load animations efficiently, and test your website on mobile data. Beautiful and fast are absolutely possible together. It just takes care in the build.
5. The enquiry form asks too much
Every extra required field is another reason to give up. Long forms feel like work, especially on a phone.
The fix: ask only for what you genuinely need to reply, often just name, email or phone, and a short message. You can gather the rest once you’re talking. And test that the form actually sends, every few months.
Try this today
Open your website on your phone and try to enquire, from the homepage, in under a minute. Every moment you hesitate, scroll looking for something, or type information you’d rather not share is a moment your customers are hesitating too.
6. It talks about you more than them
“We are passionate about excellence and have years of experience” tells a visitor very little. They’re asking what you can do for them.
The fix: write about your client’s problem and the outcome you deliver. Instead of “We offer premium web design”, try “A website that makes your business look as good as it really is, and brings in enquiries while you work.”
7. Visitors have unanswered questions
How much does it roughly cost? How long does it take? What happens next? Do you service my area? If people can’t find the answer, many will move on to a business where they can.
The fix: add a short FAQ to your key pages, explain your process step by step, and give some guidance on investment, even a “from” price or a range, so people can tell whether you’re right for them.
8. The design gets in the way
Sometimes the design itself is the problem: text over busy images that’s hard to read, low-contrast colours, menus hidden behind clever icons, or animations that delay the content people came for.
The fix: every design decision should serve the visitor. At Femme Creative, every page has a purpose and every animation has a reason. If an effect doesn’t help someone understand, trust or choose you, it’s decoration, and decoration can be cut.
A great website isn’t just beautiful. It’s beautiful with a job to do.
Bringing it together
You don’t need to sacrifice style for results. The websites that perform best combine both: a design that makes people feel something, with structure that guides them confidently to the next step.
